Being picky about things

It has been roughly, 8 months since I last posted a blog post. Damn, and here I promised I would try and do more of them. But I have been busy so let’s just blame it on that shall we?

Today, december 14th started with the realization of me once more going “I should spend more time playing EvE Online”
Why did I come to this realization? Well, because at exactly midnight today, so when it went from 23:59 to 00:00 to ring in the new day. I got an email from paypal and eveonline, that all three of my subbed accounts have been resubbed for the next year. Which is a whopping 131 euros per account.

Yes, yes, I have been told that I could have done it a lot cheaper, but that’s not the point. I had forgotten about this recurring sub. I play eve on a bi-weekly basis, I undock and join a fleet with the wormhole corporation I am with.

I enjoy these fleets for the banter and the occassional kill we get. Although I don’t enjoy them when we go and act we are part of a low-sec blob, I decided a few months ago not to join fleets when I knew we’d be joining those.

But other than logging in to fleet up, I don’t actually do anything in the game. I wait with a lot of the others for the hunters to catch something and then go. I used to scan, be active in jita, do some hauling, made isk doing silly missions, etc etc…

And what do I do now, fuck all. Or at least very close to fuck all.

This needs to change! I have three accounts, 6 alts and only one I use.

So today after having spend almost 400 euros resubbing all of them I shall try and do more in EvE.

Starting, with figuring out how the market works these days. Do people still fuck around in Jita? Is it Perimiter now? Both? I have about 40bill in liquid ISK that should have been used in the past 12 months on other things, that ISK now is worth less than it was a year ago. The joys of economics and all that. Just as in real life when you just have your money sitting in a savings account you actually lose money due to inflation, that’s also the case in this game.

So, let’s work on this! But…How.. If only there were some people going “Ok dude, this is my stuff in amarr how I make money, do it in Jita and make bank”

But unfortunately it isn’t that easy. Time to make a few choices.

Hopefully I will actually be more active again, I guess you, dear reader. Will find out sooner or later.

A small technicality, but it’s fine

Little did I know that transferring a .com domain would take roughly 5 whole days for it to work correctly.

So here we are, my new website up on it’s new adress and my old one without any redirects. Joys! I will fix that soonish…

The new hosting feels faster at least, so that is a good start. We will see what happens in the next few weeks.

Warping is always so pretty

I flew in a Loki for the first time in a while yesterday. It was quite fun. Even had a nice little brawl. Unfortunately the null sec group did not quite take the bait. Would have made it a little bit more fun. Guess that is for next time.

Being in fleet with people that know their EVE does make me always think that I am still quite the noob (hence the site name).

These people know who to target, know how to move the fleet, know how to anchor etc.. I barely know how to hunt anymore.
But at least I can still scan!
Soon my alt will be ready to fly interdictors too, I will then be flying a DPS and a Sabre. Not only that but I have a third account skilling into logi, still about 20 days to go for that though.
But we are getting there, albeit slowly. Not that I can’t fly logi on my main, but let’s be honest.
Most people like shooting things more than being the healer šŸ˜‰

Although healing in other MMOs is quite fun too.

I finally did it

The thing I have been talking and thinking about for the past couple of months (even years) has finally happened.

I have started playing again, actively.

The past few weeks I have been looking at /r/evejobs and wondering on whether or not I would find a group that I could join. One that I could have fun with and that I would fit into.

Well, sometime in the past 14 days I found what I was looking for, and now that Iā€™m back home from a little time off in UK I am actively playing again. I’m scanning wormholes, joining fleets, and looking at people in Asteros from afar while in my cloaky Tengu.

As per usual I am a clueless noob and have no idea what I am doing.
I have come back into a game where a gate has dissapeared between Jita and Amarr, where my favorite interceptor (Crusader) is no longer nullified, where there are new ships and factions.

That said, Leshaks are pretty.

Leshak around the sun

A long, long time ago

I’m sure you guys know the rest, but if you don’t. It’s “In a galaxy far away”

Sometime around the same time I first started playing EvE Online I was also playing the SOE/Lucasart MMO called “Star Wars Galaxies”

Last week, when on the way to the gym a friend of mine reminded me of it and how much different it was compared to… Well any MMO on the market back then and even now.

Much like EvE it was a complete sandbox environment, you were the writer of your own story. Graphically it was shit but, well it was a game that launched in 2003 that didn’t have that many graphic updates. Quite a few content updates though, adding new items, new ways to play, instances etc.

Unlike to what I do in EvE, I never played any PvP in SWG. I was a trader, a class for the craftsmen. I made spaceship parts and sold them to people all over the server, taking custom orders etc. I even had a nice little shop customized for it.

The reason why I stopped playing SWG is not because I had a choice, it’s because EA had made a deal with lucasart for a new upcoming mmo called Star Wars: The Old Republic. They figured that it would not be good for their numbers to have two Star Wars mmo’s up and running so they had SWG shut down.

I don’t think that there were more than 15 000 people playing at that time, but it was a loss to all of us.

It’s been since 2011 that I have played that game, and whenever I started thinking about it I missed it quite a bit. But as it turns out there’s a few private servers out there, and my old guild is playing on that one. So last Saturday, I downloaded the client from steam (yes it’s still on there) and joined the private server.

The nostalgia is real and I’m quite enjoying myself. We’ll see how long that lasts.

I don’t even know what I’m doing

FC: ā€œCould you take over for a bitā€

ME: ā€œSureā€

Thatā€™s how it went on TS but in my mind I was going ā€œOh fuck, Iā€™m not even sure whatā€™s going on, Iā€™m not good at this FC bit, we only kill MTUā€™s when I lead a roamā€

I basically donā€™t feel that comfortable yet in the role of an FC.
I like doing it, but I dislike not finding us anything to shoot. It makes me wonder if Iā€™m boring my fleet members, if theyā€™re even enjoying themselves.
I guess itā€™s partly due to bad luck, partly my fault? I donā€™t know.

Did a few things in the last week.

We had to go help defend something in null-sec. I donā€™t remember what because it was so damn boring. It just showed me once more why sov-null is not for me at all. Something about ihub, enthosis and waiting. All of those things are not fun, especially the waiting part, and supposedly the other two translate roughly to the same thing. You wait for things to happen.

I get that some people donā€™t mind that kind of playtime. Where you just follow orders, wait for the FC to call the shots and undock when you have to, dock up when told etc etc.
Iā€™m not a fan of that. After about half an hour of waiting, finally allowed to undock, we warped to where the so called fight was happening, only to warp away again because our numbers were not needed (WHAT?!)

So that was lots of fun. But not really.

We did a roam the other day. As is usual since thatā€™s what happens about 80% of the time.
I took over as FC for about half an hour. And while I was wondering about my own incompetence we caught an Ishtar, and a bit later a miner. Itā€™s not much but at least itā€™s not just an MTU.

hPWY1rW

After that little roam it was decided to ā€œragerollā€ the static. Which basically means that we were going to keep rolling the hole in search of targets.

Letā€™s just say that ended up in me dying.

My death, once more taught me that station games are bad.

Fighting is fun if you outnumber them and even fun if you get outnumbered.
But only if you have a chance to beat the odds. Dying because someone drops a carrier on you or suddenly undocks in the exact counter of your fleet. No fun in that.

Well, itā€™s kind of funny if they drop a carrier on you to save a mining fleet. That one did make me smile.

But station games, theyā€™re not fun. I donā€™t like it when people try to bait you into getting them only to then dock up, and undock in something bigger. Either you try and shoot people, or you run like hell. Thatā€™s the way it should work, and it does work. Sometimes in your favour, on other times. Not so much.

Next time Iā€™ll just check it out from a distance and if we do get to destroy something on station, Iā€™ll come and help. Next time, Iā€™ll try not to die

Job interviews aren’t as hard

Finding a corporation to join in EvE Online, is a pain in the ass. Or at least it is for me. Why? Because I want to find the best fit that I can have, and that means checking out a LOT of corporations and having a LOT of conversations and mailing go back and forth.

And even when you finally figure out that you want to join a certain one, someone else invites you to have a little conversation and you start thinking ā€œOh, wow these guys could be it tooā€.

One of usSource:Ā Control Alt Delete comic

Not only that, but even if you then finally figure out which people you like best, you get interviewed by them too. This all made me think of a CAD comic from some time ago. It describes the process vs other MMOā€™s quite well. Even to the part of the blood sample, although Iā€™m sure they were kidding about that oneā€¦ *shifty eyes*

This was how I spent most of my day yesterday and the day before.

I made a post on the forums, stating that I was in need of a new corporation, new friends and what I was looking for.

Turns out, what Iā€™m looking for is too general and that made sure that I was not only contacted by the kind that I was looking for, but also by people who did mostly mining.

I wondered where in my post I ever defined that I wanted to mine but turns out that some people define ā€˜Industryā€™ as mining. Who knew, I sure didnā€™t.

For those of you out there that do define this as mining, I get where youā€™re coming from, but itā€™s not, not really. My definition of industry as a whole would be the invention and/or manufacturing of the products, not really getting the raw material that you need to make them. Processing could work too but mining is just that, mining.

Anyhow, after two days of getting mails, having conversations etc etc, I finally decided to apply to one. I gave them my api key and am currently waiting to be accepted or denied.

Iā€™m leaning towards the first, seeing as I donā€™t think I look like a spy, Iā€™d probably suck at it anyhow.

If I do get accepted, Iā€™ll be going back to Null sec, give them another shot, I really hope that this time will be different. What I talked about with the Corporationā€™s CEO was positive, even their public channel was active and fun so, fingers crossed.

I still have a wish to go to w-space though. So I decided that Iā€™m going to have my alt join another corporation, one that one of my readers joined a while back and sounds like fun. The alt isnā€™t that well trained and still has a ways to go, but Iā€™m sure I can have fun in w-space as well as null sec. Best of both worlds I guess/hope.

Weā€™ll see what happens

New player in town

A few months ago, a friend of mine pointed me towards an upcoming MMO. This one would allow you to play on your pc, your tablet and even your cellphone. It would not matter where you are youā€™d be able to log in with one of the supported devices and continue playing.

I was intrigued but forgot all about it due to the many, many other games around.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago. This game was going to go in closed beta and my friend had already bought a founder pack. Buying that he had access to alpha but every time there was an alpha he was out of the country and without any time to test it.

This time it was different, he turned it on, gave me feedback and the second day of the closed beta I was sold. I bought a founder pack too.

The game Iā€™m talking about is Albion Online. Itā€™s basically a sandbox game, not unlike EvE Online. Thereā€™s an AMA from the developers that gives a lot of information about the game itself and a lot of examples picked out of EvE.

This is not a coincidence because one CCPā€™s ex-developers helped with the creation of the game.

Itā€™s harder than most MMOā€™s because you actually have to work to get higher up. In most these days you get a lot of things thrown into your lap. In here, thatā€™s not the case.

Which is part of why Iā€™m liking it so much.

Unfortunately, the closed beta will currently run for three months, meaning that the release will be in Q2 2016 at the earliest. So, I guess Iā€™ll have to be patient.

Do check out the AMA and the gameā€™s site. The developers are rather active and the game shows promise.

Thereā€™s lots of streamers on Twitch playing it, I stream it too from time to time but Iā€™m trying my utmost best not to play too much.

What with it being beta, there will be a wipe near release so I donā€™t want to spend too many hours on something that wonā€™t be there in a few months.

What’s happening

Well, it’s been a while since my last post. I would say that I’ve been busy but that would be a lie because I’m not.

I’m currently playing Elder Scrolls Online again. A co-worker of mine plays the game and seeing as I got bored with WoW once more, I decided to start ESO again.

In the past few weeks I’ve leveled up from Veteran 4 to Veteran 15, so I’m one level away from max, after which. Well I have no idea whatsoever what will happen then, I’m hoping my co-worker will help me out with that, but seeing that he has been doing that since I started again, that shouldn’t be a problem.

The game itself is pretty fun, quests are the same kind of get this, kill that quests as in any other MMO but I like the elder scrolls feel of it all, plus there’s so many books to read!

In a few weeks it’ll be time for a few new games, the biggest one I’m anticipating is Fallout 4. I’ve got my pre-order ready, and around the same time my steam controller will arrive too.

Just a few more weeks! Can’t wait!

I’ll try to think about updating more in the near future

I can’t help myself

Iā€™m an MMO player at heart. What I mean by this is that despite the fact that I play other games, MMOā€™s will always be the games that I like best.

This all started ages ago with Everquest and Star Wars Galaxies, but the real culprit of my love for MMOā€™s was, and maybe even still is World of Warcraft.

You can say what you want of Blizzard, but when you look at the game they created all those years ago, and see it still standing you can only tip your hat to them and give them a small applause.

WoW is a game that you can get bored of for months, or even years at the time, but it still has some sort of sirenā€™s call to make you come back to it.

Case in point: Myself.

I first started playing the game in august 2005. I was 16 at the time and had finished my first summer job. The paycheck of said job went to building my own pc. Because before that I had to share it with my two sisters, which basically meant playing one hour, waiting for 2. You can imagine the amount of fighting that was done about ā€œI need one more minuteā€

After that, in October 2007 I subbed once more, ever since March 2007 I can notice a trend in my subscription history, subbing for 3 months, waiting for 4-6 months and then playing the game again for a while longer.

This has been going on for years and it still gets me.

I started playing the game again on the 26th of June, Iā€™m currently starting my third month in. Last time before that was in December 2014. Weā€™ll see how long Iā€™ll be playing this time.

I have to admit that one of the only reasons I started playing again is because my friends are playing. MMOā€™s are nice because you can play with other people. But I noticed that I only play them for longer than a few months when I have friends playing them, and when we have common goals.

Iā€™m currently leveling a few alts, if youā€™re in EU Twisting Nether, come say hi. I wonā€™t bite.

I might just hit you if youā€™re alliance though.

I love making alts
