Bringing the party outside

One of the little things you learn to like about wormholes is the fact that every day, you’ll have a connection to somewhere else. Somewhere new to explore, meet the locals, and kill them.

The other day was one of those days. Having asked what we should do we decided to fleet up and go on a little roam in our Null-connection. It wasn’t too fruitful, I’m pretty sure we scared off the locals, they weren’t used to meeting new people.

We found a few people hanging around in space but they had a bubble around them or were on their way to somewhere else. A shame, we couldn’t catch anyone to exchange ammunition with.

Luckily that changed on our way back home. Turns out the locals were setting up a little welcome party, to make sure that we knew that we were appreciated, going door to door, wanting to say hi.

They were a bit off our home hole (phrasing?) so one of us decided he’d go say hi, you know, so that we could warp to him and get the party started. They had a few hurricanes, a few drakes etc etc, you know. The kind of stuff I should not be engaging with a hound. Since that was the stuff I was flying with since I only have a few hounds in our citadel. Oh, and a Proteus, I’ll get to that.

Turns out the welcome party didn’t really think about keeping us there, but luckily we did think about making sure that nobody could leave the party sooner (scrams, get it? I’m making it a bit more interesting). Thus our FC decided to bring out his Proteus, because what better way to use an expensive party ship, if you can leave before it gets rowdy.

This made me log on my other account and get in my Proteus too, it had been a while since I flown it, but last time I did I had fun with it.

This time was no different.

We came, we saw, we exchanged ammunition and fireworks. All in all, it was a good day. I’m looking forward to more of these.

Job interviews aren’t as hard

Finding a corporation to join in EvE Online, is a pain in the ass. Or at least it is for me. Why? Because I want to find the best fit that I can have, and that means checking out a LOT of corporations and having a LOT of conversations and mailing go back and forth.

And even when you finally figure out that you want to join a certain one, someone else invites you to have a little conversation and you start thinking “Oh, wow these guys could be it too”.

One of usSource: Control Alt Delete comic

Not only that, but even if you then finally figure out which people you like best, you get interviewed by them too. This all made me think of a CAD comic from some time ago. It describes the process vs other MMO’s quite well. Even to the part of the blood sample, although I’m sure they were kidding about that one… *shifty eyes*

This was how I spent most of my day yesterday and the day before.

I made a post on the forums, stating that I was in need of a new corporation, new friends and what I was looking for.

Turns out, what I’m looking for is too general and that made sure that I was not only contacted by the kind that I was looking for, but also by people who did mostly mining.

I wondered where in my post I ever defined that I wanted to mine but turns out that some people define ‘Industry’ as mining. Who knew, I sure didn’t.

For those of you out there that do define this as mining, I get where you’re coming from, but it’s not, not really. My definition of industry as a whole would be the invention and/or manufacturing of the products, not really getting the raw material that you need to make them. Processing could work too but mining is just that, mining.

Anyhow, after two days of getting mails, having conversations etc etc, I finally decided to apply to one. I gave them my api key and am currently waiting to be accepted or denied.

I’m leaning towards the first, seeing as I don’t think I look like a spy, I’d probably suck at it anyhow.

If I do get accepted, I’ll be going back to Null sec, give them another shot, I really hope that this time will be different. What I talked about with the Corporation’s CEO was positive, even their public channel was active and fun so, fingers crossed.

I still have a wish to go to w-space though. So I decided that I’m going to have my alt join another corporation, one that one of my readers joined a while back and sounds like fun. The alt isn’t that well trained and still has a ways to go, but I’m sure I can have fun in w-space as well as null sec. Best of both worlds I guess/hope.

We’ll see what happens

A newbie’s experience

Please note; I have tried to make this blog somewhat comprehensive but when rereading it  I noticed that it seems like I go from one point to the next without finishing the previous. Let’s just blame this on me being sick and my medication, shall we? Good

The past week I’ve seen a lot of people try out EvE again. Friends of mine, people on forums I’m a member of.

And most of them have absolutely no idea what’s going on. It made me wonder, is this because of the fact that the tutorials aren’t that good. Or is it because in this day and age, people don’t actually read the instructions anymore.
“Do I have to?”

The last time I’ve done the tutorials was over a year ago, I made a new character and decided to kill some time doing them. I can’t remember them being too hard to understand. But are they actually good enough to let someone understand what EvE is all about. Because in the end, the only thing that they do, is show you how to manufacture, how to start a mission and how to mine.

They’re great because you get a bunch of skills and starter ships for your adventure, but then you just get cast into the deep end, with no lifejacket and a basic idea of how swimming is supposed to work.
Which is why about 2 out of 3 people (might be more, this is just a random number I am making up so don’t use this against me) stop playing once they did the tutorials.

Good thing there are people out there that enjoy helping others out, showing them the way and answering questions. When someone asks me something about industry or whatever I do in the game, I try to answer the question in a comprehensible way. I fail from time to time but I’ve had people tell me that they understand the game better because of what I’m telling them. (Do not that I never state that what I tell them is actually the correct thing, I am in fact, a noob)

“Oh, pretty lights”

It’s a shame though that so many stop playing because they don’t know what to do. Or because they’re waiting for that certain skill to finish training so that they can go out and have fun. Which is mostly the point where I tell them that they can have an equal amount of fun in a frigate as in a battleship. More so in fact due to the frigate being a lot quicker.

The problem for our newbros is the fact that they have no idea what they can do. I explain them what I do in the game and tell them that I can help them if they want to go that certain route. But there are so many options to go to, that it can be a bit too much.

Places like E-Uni are nice, but what happens when a newbie doesn’t want to be part of such a big corporation, what happens when he wants to do null but has no idea what the consequences of these things are?

I remember starting EvE without a clue what I could do, I was training everything, because the tutorials never did explain to me that sooner or later, I will regret spending time in training a skill that I will not use.
Makes you wonder though, how can you make sure, that people don’t stop playing. You help them, but where is the line for helping them. You don’t want this to be too easy a game, but you still want more people joining you in your game.

So tell me; how do you do it?

Every day, you learn something new.

As it turns out, I’m not that good at scanning. Whether it is partly due to my lack of skills or because I just suck at it in general. I’m just bad at it.

I found that out while trying to check if I could scan things in a high sec area. It took me about 20 minutes to resolve the one gas site that I found there. Twenty whole minutes.
Scanning ship, at your service

Makes me wonder how bad I’ll be at this if I tried it in w-space. And I don’t feel like training it right now because I have other plans in my queue. I’m currently training to finally be able to fly a Loki. I already have all the subsystems in place, the only thing missing is Minmatar Cruiser V.. Which will take me 17 more days, I guess that just goes to show that I should plan things better than I do right now.

But! The good news is that I finally finished Gallente Battleship V so my Machariel now has the full bonuses for both the Battleship skills. And most people know, I really, really love my Machariel.

Which makes it even better for me that people seem to want to get rid of theirs, the prices of Pirate faction battleships has been dropping ever since Rubicon hit.
The whispers I heard say that this is because of the warp speed changes, making them rather slow. But I still love my Mach, it’s my first baby and I will treasure her/him/it forever.

And in other news, turns out that I forgot to enable auto subscription on my main account so I lost 14 hours of training..Darn

What can’t you do?!

When people talk about EvE, you will usually hear about the endless possibilities EvE gives you. Hence the name sandbox, you can do whatever you want, however you want it. Well, within the bounds of the game at least.
You know, in case you’re wondering. http://swiftandbitter.com/eve/wtd/

There’s a problem about this though, something that seems to be something that both veterans and noobs have to deal with. With all the options out there for you. How are you ever going to pick what you want to do? How are you even going to be doing them?

A few months ago I had a friend of mine join the game, and he liked it, but he had a problem with the diversity. He had no idea what he wanted to do. He started training something, and every time his queue finished he said just put something new in it and then logged off.

Because he didn’t feel confident enough that he’d be able to do anything with what he just trained. He didn’t believe the whole “You can still do things with a low amount of SP” that I kept telling him.

Which is why he stopped playing and went back to WoW. Because he felt that in WoW he atleast has the ability to keep up to, and even surpass other people by being better than them.
It’s a shame that he stopped playing because I’d love it if I could get some real life friends to play. But c’est la vie.

I too am trying to get rid of this problem though, what on earth shall I do. Is a question I ask myself everything I log in. One that doesn’t get answered 90% of the time, I make plans, but fail to go through with them.

Right now I’m looking at a hangar with 510 BPC’s in it to invent, and I have no idea which one to start with.
I’m also looking at another word document in which I’m trying to write up a ‘Looking for Corporation’ post for myself. Seeing that I really want to join the wormhole life. Or at least get to know it.

Guess I need to be more decisive in general.
